Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” –Matthew 22:37 (NIV)
This is a well-known passage that is often spoken or read without much thought. But break it down. Listen to what Jesus has told us to do: We are to love God completely – heart, soul, and mind. Let’s take them one at a time. Heart – that is kind of easy: we are to love God and want to please him. Soul — a little harder to understand: we are to love him with every fiber of our being, our very essence. In other words, our love for God should be second nature — who we are. Mind — this one may be the most difficult. Non-believers often ridicule Christians, thinking no intelligent creature could buy into that religious nonsense. Even some Christians think they are to check their brains at the door when it comes to spiritual matters. But God created our brains and wants us to use them. We are to love him with all of our mind. That means to study, to think, to explore the things of God intellectually. Your relationship with God is designed to be comprehensive. Enjoy it all.
